In this section, I will explain what I have read from several Burmese sources. In Burma we have often heard of various types of weizzars who attained the status of weizzar by following different lines of disciplines. Some of the types that I have come across are written below: -
Aba Yarkyaw Sayadaw 1. Mercury weizzar (badar weizzar) 2. Iron weizzar (than weizzar) 3. Healing weizzar (sei weizzar) 4. Rune weizzar (inn weizzar) 5. Mantra weizzar (mandan weizzar) Note: the words in brackets are Burmese words with the nearest pronunciations. The mercury weizzars are adepts at alchemy and get thier powers from the "dat lone" which is a special form of alloy which they obtain by following the very strict disciplines which involve not only the study of alchemy but also spiritual development. To beome a weizzar you have to promise not only to yourself but to the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Shanga plus all the holy weizzar masters who have gained the path of liberation (htwet yut pauk - those who have found a way out from this mortal body and have been transformed into the body equal to the power of a deva or celestial being). You have to start by promising to keep the five precepts to begin the path of purification. This is called "ngar bar thihla" in the Burmese language and it means "the five precepts". It should be noted that in the Buddhist tradition, the precepts are serious promises that you make to yourself. They are not suppposed to be broken but if and when you break one or all of them you have to start from square one. You are totally responsible for your spiritual purification. They are not commandments of the Buddha. The Buddha said, "You yourself must make the effort, Buddhas only show the way". So also with the holy weizzars. They can only show the way. When you keep your promises and adhere to the strict training of spiritual development, one or more of these holy weizzars will contact you and give you the necessary instructions as to what the next step should be. When you feel comfortable with the five precepts, you should go further and do the eight precepts. Then when you have succeeded with the eight precepts, you go a step higher and do the ten precepts. That is the way of sila or the discipline of conduct. Without good sila, you cannot do concentration. Your mind will be always troubled with your evil deeds. The next step is to get connected to the weizzar masters (spiritual mentors). Some of the weizzars are adepts in all sorts of magical powers and some weizzars are experts in insight meditation. To get the right connection, you should go in front of the alter and pray to the weizzars for guidance and tell your beads. You can say a mantra or a word like "Arahan". Arahan is a virtue of the Buddha and it means "he who is worthy of veneration by all beings - man, devas and Brahmas". The object is to get concentration. You should go this until you feel a spiritual presence flowing into your body starting from the head. The path of the weizzar is full of danger so it is safer to do it within a group of trusted fellow seekers of truth and wisdom. In Burma, there are many secret brotherhoods of wisdom seekers who try to do their work with utmost secrecy and discretion. They will not tell their secrets if you are not a member of their group. The name of one of the groups is called "Arahan group". In Burmese it is called "Arahan gaing". Gaing in Burmese means a brotherhood. This group is called the Arahan gaing because they try to get concentration by concentrating on the virtue of "arahan". When you have a master, he will guide you in all the necessary steps and make sure that no harm comes to you. It is believed that many evil spirits try to hinder the progress of a person who wants to walk the weizzar path. There are many spiritual beings who are jealous when a person attains supernormal powers because the Weizzar can become powerful and in many cases the weizzars have the powers to command these spirits. It is because of this that the jealous spiritual beings will try to deter the person who is on the weizzar path by laying temptations in his path in the form of power, money and beautiful women. |
